686 Outerwear Company History

Since Michael Akira West first stepped on a skateboard in the early eighties, he always had quirky ideas.  Mike spent most of his time street skating in Los Angeles and Venice Beach, until 1985, when a good friend introduced him to snowboarding. The concept of actually skating on the snow added a new element to his life. Throughout the following years, Mike worked and rode at a local mountain in Big Bear, listened to punk-alternative, hip-hop, and jazz music, collected loads of sneakers, artwork, vintage clothing, and finished school at the University of Southern California.  Over years of living the lifestyle he loved, Mike learned one important thing. "Why not do something that you're already into? Why do you have to work and then play? Can't you do both at the same time?" - And that's exactly how things got started. On November 13, 1992, the six eight six clothing company was formed. Contrary to many circulating rumors, the 686 name comes from a crucial date in the life of Mike's grandmother (June 6th, 1986). Since the beginning, It has been all about providing the riding community innovative and fashionable outerwear and clothing inspired directly from the same Los Angeles urban and artistic principals it was founded upon. The company's "more than you expected" philosophy of providing customers progressive and fashion forward designs is world known and often imitated by others. Products like the trademarked SMARTY line of removable liners, the trademarked TIMES line of limited edition co-branded products, the trademarked ACE line of collaborative artist projects, the patented TOOLBELT line of functional belts, and fabric innovations in Waterproof Denim, Corduroy and Herringbone, all make up the Six eight Six name. Controlled growth, clean design, an obsession to make products better, and a belief to enjoy life is what they are all about.

Technology

Infidry®:
Our EXCLUSIVE microporous, waterproof/breathable coating and laminating process. Microporous means that moisture from your body's perspiration is allowed to exit while preventing additional moisture from the elements to enter, thus staying dry and warm from the inside. Microporous coatings are polyurethane mixtures applied with high pressure to the back side of the shell fabric. The fabric goes through a three-step waterproofing process to ensure it stays soft and supple. These processes also produce added durability, heavier weight and softer drape. The higher the waterproof rating, the more precipitation the fabric can block from crossing into the barrier; thus keeping you drier for longer. The higher the moisture vapor transport rating, the more body steam passes through the fabric to exit outside, which keeps you cooler for longer. Here is a summary of our rating system by category:

INFIDRY®-20 20,000mm water permeability
15,000gm moisture vapor transport
PLEXUS, SMARTY MEN'S 20K: Encompasses our best weather protection for blizzard-like conditions and varying temperature ranges. INFIDRY®-15 15,000mm water permeability
10,000gm moisture vapor transport
PLEXUS, SMARTY 15K: Provides excellent weather protection for blizzard-like conditions and varying temperature ranges. INFIDRY®-10 10,000mm water permeability
8,000gm moisture vapor transport
PLEXUS, 686 SMARTY 10K, RESERVED, MANNUAL 10K, LIMITED EDITION FALLEN AND SIGNATURE LV: Gives great weather protection during winter conditions. INFIDRY®-8 8,000mm water permeability
5,000gm moisture vapor transport
PLEXUS, YOUTH SMARTY, MANNUAL, LIMITED EDITION SNAGGLETOOTH: Offers good weather protection for most winter conditions. INFIDRY®-5 5,000mm water permeability
5,000gm moisture vapor transport
MANNUAL, RECLAIM PROJECT, YOUTH: Yields solid weather protection for average winter temperatures and fair conditions. INFI-LOFTT RESERVED: A premium down-alternative performance insulation engineered for maximum warmth, loft and softness. INFI-LOFTTM insulation keeps the body warm, dry and comfortable, even in foul winter conditions. DUPONT® DWR (DURABLE WATER REPELLENT) 600mm water permeability
Used on all our fabrications, DWR is the last finish applied on the shell fabric surface. It enables the fabric to shed water, preventing saturation and enhancing the coating or laminate beneath the fabric. DWR also helps re- pel stains and oils on the surface which can impede the fabrics "breathability". BEMIS® TAPED SEAMS All seams are specially taped with Bemis® branded seam taping to further insure quality workmanship and guaranteed waterproofness.

AVALANCHE RESCUE SYSTEM Used on specific PLEXUS and MEN'S SMARTY garments, RECCO® is an ava- lanche rescue system utilized by more than 600 rescue organizations worldwide to assist in the efficient location of burials. RECCO technology enables rapid directional pinpointing of a victim's precise location using harmonic radar.

Washing & Care Instructions

Very Important!  Zip up all zippers and attach all Velcro before loading!  Zipper sliders and teeth can easily be damaged in the washer and/or dryer.  Velcro gets clogged up with fuzz from other garments and can snag your other clothes, causing damage to both.

+Front-Load Machine Wash Only!  Using an agitator-style top-load washer could possibly do damage to your 686 technical outerwear or clothing.

-- Gentle cycle should be all that is needed to clean your technical outerwear.  If your outerwear is stained, you may be out of luck.

-- Use cold water!  Actually, warm is OK, but cold is preferred to maintain the waterproofing.

-- Using outerwear-specific detergent or powder.  Using liquid detergent that is not outerwear-specific clogs the pores of technical fabrics and damage the DWR coating, greatly reducing the performance (waterproof/breathability) of the garment.

+ Hang Dry in shade or Tumble Dry on Low Heat.  Drying with excess heat can damage or melt fabric, zippers, and/or trims.  Leave in until “almost dry” and change to NO HEAT or hang dry to finish.  Low heat actually helps re-activate waterproofing after washing.

+ Replenish Waterproofing (DWR) as needed .  The DWR coating (the gypsy magic that makes water droplets bead up on your outerwear) on all technical fabrics wear out after time and use.  Especially if you are around campfires, smokers, oily lift pulleys, or other contaminants in general.  Revive the performance of your 686 technical outerwear by washing as instructed, then using a spray-on waterproofing product such as NikWax TX-Direct.

+ Or roll in clean snow, repeat as needed! This is the preferred method to clean your technical outerwear.  Go snowboarding, have fun!

DO NOT USE ON YOUR GARMENT

Bleach -  your colors will fade.  Technical outerwear in white should not use bleach either.  It can damage the waterproofing.
Fabric  Softener -  clogs the pores of technical fabrics and can damage the DWR coating, greatly reducing the performance (waterproof/breathability) of the garment.
Iron   - you may damage the performance of your technical fabric, or worse, melt the fabric itself.
Dry Cleaning   - dry cleaning products can damage the performance of your technical fabric.
Damage in the wash is not considered a manufacturer's defect and is not covered under warranty.
